Generating images for the DnD sessions is fun, but frustrating. I fed around 17 baby giraffes to AI today and probably raised global temperatures by 2 degrees to get a single image for our last DnD session. I think I spent around 3 hours prompting, to get it right.

Apparently the best way to iterate on image creation (at least with Gemini) is to reply directly to the image in the chat. Clearly state what needs changing, provide precise spatial directions, and ask it to maintain the same style.

The Step-by-Step Approach

  • Reference the specific image: Do not start a new chat. Reply to the exact message where Gemini generated the image.
  • Use precise language: Be hyper-specific about additions or removals. Instead of “change the background,” say, “remove the brick wall in the background and replace it with a sunny beach.”
  • Enforce consistency: If you like the subject but need tweaks, remind it to keep the rest of the elements identical. Add phrases like “keep the exact same subject and art style but…”

Example Correction Prompts

  • Adding an element: “Using the provided image, add a small, knitted wizard hat to the cat’s head. Make sure it matches the soft lighting of the original photo.”
  • Modifying an area: “In this image, change only the color of the car from red to matte black. Leave the background completely untouched.”
  • Removing an element: “Using this image, please erase the first pumpkin on the left and replace it with a basketball.”

Troubleshooting

If Gemini hallucinates, ignores instructions, or generates a completely new image instead of editing the old one:

  1. Be highly literal: Tell it to “Analyze the existing image and add/remove [X].”
  2. Safety filters: Note that Gemini has very strict safety guardrails and will completely refuse to edit or alter the faces or bodies of real, uploaded human photos.
  3. Regenerate: If the model gets confused, you can also use the three-dot menu to regenerate or redo the prompt from scratch with fresh instructions.
