Ray Bradbury (Aug. 22, 1920 – Jun. 5, 2012)

Imagine my surprise today, when opening my browser at work, to discover that Ray Bradbury passed away yesterday at the age of 91. Of course, we all come to an end, and we should all be so lucky as to get to 91 years, but wow… it’s weird to see this headline.

I’ll admit, I haven’t seen much of his work, but I know his influence, and I’ve seen some of his most influential works. When I was young, my dad and I watched The Martian Chronicles and it left me with memories that have haunted me ever since. Mr. Bradbury was able to use the elements of his story to craft something that is rightfully considered a classic in the genre.

Other works of his, not leastways Fahrenheit 451, A Sound of Thunder— honestly, to name only the best of his stories will still take up a full article of its own. You know what? I remember watching a TV adaptation of The Veldt once. Its ostensibly listed as children’s literature on his Wikipedia page. The story of two children addicted to their virtual reality wall of their nursery, and how they ultimately have to eliminate their parents to ensure they are never separated from their precious wall is another one that left indelible marks on my imagination.

I love to write. If I ever rise to being a third as good as Ray Bradbury, I will die a happy man.

GeekMusic: Track 11 & 12 – The Phenomenauts

It’s time for (last Friday’s) Friday  Two-fer!

With a budget slightly greater than Antikas and I could ever scrape together, the Phenomenauts put together some fun and funky sci-fi videos for their awesome rockabilly sounds.

Let’s watch the video for Tiny Robots

Everything from the space Toyota Corolla and the photonegative alien girl, to the Batman ’66 building climb and the worst-ever-ROM-cosplay-robot bespeak the love these punk rockers have for the B-movie sci-fi genre. The Phenomenauts have been together since 2000, and have a trio of albums out to date. Bands of this type make their living off live performances, not studio albums, but you might have to make your way down to California to catch them.

Now, I can’t find a video for their song Space Mutants 4, which was my first choice for a second song (… or second choice for a first song? I don’t know; I’m not good at the math), so here is the non-video (thanks, YouTube!) for a song whose sentiment we can all proudly agree on.

Hear that, Venus? Yeah, that’s right. Suck it! Earth is the best! What’s that, Venus? You and Uranus are the only planets in our solar system to revolve east to west? Well we invented Rockstar energy drinks! Shove that in your sulfuric acid clouds.

Northern Ontario Expo

Fan conventions and expos are a fairly common occurrence these days. At least they are in the civilized parts of the world, but Timmins? Since when is there a comic book and sci-fi convention in Timmins?

Apparently, since last year! And it’s happening again this year… in a couple weeks!

The con will run at the McIntyre Arena, concurrent with the annual Sportsman Show, April 21-23 (thus gathering sporty-outdoor types and nerds in one place in what is surely an experiment in Darwinian theory). While last year boasted Lou Ferrigno as its biggest draw, this year you can meet John Schneider (from The Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville fame) alongside the General Lee.

The 501st Canadian Garrison will also be in attendance, likely a move designed to draw attention to the Empire’s flagging public support. Sure, everyone loves the rebels, but can they provide a viable economic formula for prosperity for the Republic? I’ll believe it when I see it.

As well, a couple of actresses from Star Wars: The Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith will be on hand to sign autographs, take photos with fans, and fuel fanboy fantasies for years to come.

If any local geeks are going to go, take some pics and share them here! I won’t be there, but I may be attending our Ottawa ComicCon. If I do, let me know if you want me to snag surreptitious pics of Patrick Stewart in the men’s room.
