Title : Hacker busts IE8 on Windows 7 in 2 minutes |
 |
 |
 GeekSecurity |
Two researchers yesterday won $10,000 each at the Pwn2Own hacking contest by bypassing important security measures of Windows 7.
Both Peter Vreugdenhil of the Netherlands and a German researcher who would only identify himself by the first name Nils found ways to disable DEP (data execution prevention) and ASLR (address space layout randomization), which are two of Windows 7's most vaunted anti-exploit features. Each contestant faced down the fully-patched 64-bit version of Windows 7 and came out a winner.
Vreugdenhil used a two-exploit combination to circumvent first ASLR and then DEP to successfully hack IE8. A half-hour later, Nils bypassed the same defensive mechanisms to exploit Mozilla's Firefox 3.6. For their efforts, each was ...

Title : Gmail, Too, Seeks to Rival Facebook |
 |
 |
 GeekNet |
Google is adding Facebook and Twitter-like social media sharing features to its Gmail service with an addition called "Buzz."
The Buzz tab will be automatically added over the next few days to Gmail users' accounts, underneath their inbox tab. When clicked, users will be able to share status updates, news stories, photos and videos, similar to features found on Facebook and Twitter.

The new service will feature several improvements over other social networking sites, Google executives said. Users will have full customization in the information they want to make public and the information they'd ...

 |

 GeekSoftware |
Some people may see Google's Chrome operating system as competing with existing Linux desktop distributions. Canonical, the company behind popular Linux distribution Ubuntu, isn't one of them. They're working with Google to make Chrome.
Sources at Canonical tell me that Canonical's Ubuntu developers have been working with Google's Chrome team since before Google announced its netbook operating system plan in July 2009. The company decided to go public with its involvement after Google announced today that they were open-sourcing the Chrome operating system.
In a Canonical blog posting, Chris Kenyon, Canonical's VP of OEM Services, revealed that "Canonical is contributing engineering to Google under contract." Canonical insid...

Title : Ubuntu 9.10 just released |
 |
 |
 GeekSoftware |
The Koala - due for its official release today - brings faster boot times, a revamped software installer, better disk encryption, online services, and quite a bit more to the popular Linux desktop.
We took the release candidate for a spin and are happy to report that while work remains, Ubuntu 9.10 has plenty of improvements and that it's well worth upgrading your current system.
For long-time Ubuntu fans, the most immediately noticeable change in Karmic Koala will likely be the new Software Center, the graphical utility for package management which replaces the traditional GNOME Add/Remove tool.
As it stands with the 9.10 release Software...
